Fri 14 February 2025:

A man filmed burning the Quran outside the Turkish Consulate in central London was attacked by a passer-by armed with a knife.

In dramatic scenes, one suspect with a rucksack and hood up is seen holding a holy book of Islam which is ablaze.

Footage posted online cuts to him lying on the road, where he is being kicked and spat at by another man who snatched the burning item off him.

The Qur’an burner can be heard calling Muslims “terrorists” while a man yielding a knife can be seen kicking and spitting on the Qur’an burner. He also lashed out at him several times with a knife but it’s not clear if any connection was made.

A delivery driver on a bicycle can also be seen kicking the Qur’an burner, while he was on the ground near the building’s barriers in Rutland Gardens, Knightsbridge on Thursday afternoon.

A man on X, formerly Twitter, claimed he was responsible for the stunt which was publicised in advance.

He alleged: “While I was burning the Quran, I was attacked with a knife.

“The ambulance and the police came.”

The user also reposted several videos of the incident.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A man has been arrested following an assault in Knightsbridge.

Muslim organisations call on UK government to take tangible steps to address rising Islamophobia

A collective call to action was made by 80 Muslim groups and leaders in August last year, pressing the UK government to address the worsening problem of Islamophobia.

In a statement, the organisations and community leaders, organised under the Islamophobia Action Group, drew attention to the normalisation of Islamophobia, which recently fuelled riots in some cities, and urged the government to officially adopt the All-Party Parliamentary Group (AAPG) definition of Islamophobia “to send a clear message that Islamophobia will not be tolerated”.

The statement also called on the government to initiate an independent investigation that would focus on the role of social media platforms, mainstream media and political narratives in disseminating hate and Islamophobia.

“The government must engage directly with legitimate, democratically elected representatives of Muslim communities, particularly the Muslim Council of Britain, to ensure that Muslim voices are heard and addressed,” it added.

Commenting on the issue, a spokesperson for the Islamophobia Action Group said: “This is a critical moment to address the root causes of hate and to protect our society.”
