Tue 02 May 2023:
Kremlin spokesperson Dimitry Peskov says the US government does not have any data on Russian losses in eastern Ukraine and estimates had been “plucked from thin air”.
“Pulling out figures out of a hat, Washington does not have the opportunity to give any correct figures, they do not have such data, this is how it should be treated. It is necessary to focus only on those figures that are published in a timely manner by the Russian Defense Ministry,” Peskov said, commenting on a relevant question.
On Monday, the White House announced that Russia has exhausted its military stockpiles and armed forces since the war intensified in eastern Ukraine.
The United States says 20,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the war in Ukraine’s Donetsk region intensified in December.
“Russia has exhausted its military stockpiles and its armed forces,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday.
He said about half of those killed were soldiers recruited by Wagner Group, which has been playing a key role in leading the war in Ukraine’s Bakhmut region.
He said the White House was not giving estimates of Ukrainian casualties because “they are the victims here. Russia is the aggressor.”
The head of Ukrainian ground forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said Russia continued to exert “maximum effort” to take Bakhmut but that it had failed so far.
Russia taking steps to increase arms production: Shoigu
Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu says Moscow has taken measures to increase the pace of production of weapons and military equipment to enable its troops to carry out its operations in Ukraine, according to state media reports.
According to Russia’s RIA Novosti state news agency, Shoigu highlighted that the Russian army now has all the weapons it needs on the battlefield.
But he called on Russia’s state-owned Tactical Missile Weapons Corporation “to double production of high-precision weapons as soon as possible”.
