Mon 17 January 2022:
According to a poll released on Monday, right-wing French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen’s rating has strengthened since anti-migrant former pundit Eric Zemmour entered the crowded contest.
Le Pen was defined as a “patriot and advocate of traditional values” by 46 percent of respondents in a Kantar Public poll conducted for Le Monde and Franceinfo from January 5-11, up 7 points from 2019. The National Rally leader was viewed as a “nationalist and xenophobe” by 40% of those polled, down 9 percentage points from February 2019.
Sixty-four percent of those polled said Zemmour was a nationalist. Only 8% said they wanted the former journalist to win this spring’s election, compared to 21% who said they wanted Le Pen to win.
The survey was announced on the same day that a Paris judge fined Zemmour for inciting racial hate after he referred to teenage migrants arriving in France in 2020 as killers and thieves. Zemmour and Le Pen are seen as the primary challengers to centrist President Emmanuel Macron, who is up against several other candidates.
