Thu 09 December 2021:

The UK High Court is expected to rule on the US government’s appeal against WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange’s extradition on Friday morning.

The court recently heard an appeal of a lower court ruling refusing to extradite the journalist to face charges in connection with leaked secret US papers.

District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled in her original judgement that she could not authorize the extradition because it would be “oppressive” to do so while Assange’s mental health is deteriorating and he is at risk of suicide in US prison.

Assange’s attorneys have continued to warn that if he is held by the US, he will commit suicide, as well as voicing worries about the “trustworthiness” of America’s pledges.

Mark Summers, a solicitor defending Assange, said that US intelligence agencies have a “obsession” with his client, citing accusations that the CIA planned to abduct and poison him while he was claiming asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

The US is pursuing Assange’s extradition for releasing thousands of sensitive documents through Wikileaks between 2010 and 2011. The documents disclosed details on the US and its allies’ actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, including charges that the US military murdered hundreds of Afghan civilians and 66,000 non-combatants in Iraq, as well as accusations that Iraqi troops tortured detainees.
