Mon 10  June 2024:

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday, June 9, the dissolution of parliament following a significant defeat of his centrist alliance by the far-right in the EU elections. Macron has called for snap legislative elections to be held on June 30 and July 7.

Macron acknowledged the EU election results as a setback for pro-European parties and expressed concern over the rise of nationalist forces, which he deemed a threat to France and Europe. The National Rally (RN) party, led by Jordan Bardella, secured more than twice the number of votes compared to Macron’s centrist alliance, with projections showing RN’s list gaining between 32.3 and 33 percent of the vote against 14.8 to 15.2 percent for Macron’s Renaissance party.

Macron emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Far-right parties are progressing everywhere on the continent. It is a situation to which I cannot resign myself.” He decided to dissolve the National Assembly as a serious but necessary act of confidence in the French people to make the best choice for their future.

Simultaneously, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition faced a similar defeat, trailing behind the conservatives and far-right parties, prompting calls from the conservative CDU-CSU bloc for Scholz to either change course or consider new elections.
