The attack in Tinzaouaten led to a high death toll among Malian defense and security forces. The Wagner Group, supporting the Malian army, confirmed Russian casualties, including a commander, following intense clashes.

Yurii Pyvovarov, Ukraine’s ambassador to Senegal, further inflamed the situation by openly supporting international terrorism, particularly in Mali, according to Maiga. The Malian government condemned the statements as acts of terrorism and an endorsement of such activities.

Immediate Diplomatic Actions

In response, Mali decided to break off diplomatic relations with Ukraine immediately. The government plans to refer the matter to judicial authorities and take measures to prevent any further destabilization from Ukrainian embassies in the region, warning international bodies and states supporting Ukraine of its alleged backing of terrorism.

Mali views support for Ukraine as support for international terrorism and considers this part of a larger pattern of actors who actively support and use terrorist groups in the region. The government intends to formally alert regional and international bodies about Ukraine’s stance.
