Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the former president of Mali who served from 2013 until his overthrow in a coup in 2020, has died at the age of 76 in the capital Bamako.
His death, revealed by the state broadcaster ORTM in a warning early Sunday, comes as the enormous African nation faces a worsening political crisis.
“President IBK died this morning at 0900 GMT at his home” in Bamako, according to a family member who used the ex-initials, leader’s with numerous additional family members confirming his death.
His former justice minister and an ex-advisor both verified the news to Reuters, albeit the cause of Keita’s death was not revealed.
Since his forced resignation, Keita’s health had deteriorated, and he sought medical treatment in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, shortly after his release from junta detention.
Keita was two years into his second five-year term when he was toppled by the military in 2020.
