Anger Over Barnier Appointment and Anti-Social Policies Fuel Protests
Protesters were also enraged by Macron’s appointment of Michel Barnier as prime minister, viewing it as a signal of the government’s shift toward austerity and far-right policies.
Union leaders criticized the administration for disregarding the results of democratic votes and implementing policies that worsen healthcare and social services.
Protests Demand Higher Salaries and Repeal of Pension Reforms
Union groups, including the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and the Solidaires unions, spearheaded nearly 250 protests across France, emphasizing the urgent need to improve public sector wages and overturn the pension reforms. Demonstrators argued that the current government prioritizes the rich while increasing the hardship of the working class.
In addition to the domestic issues, some protesters called for an end to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, waving Palestinian flags and demanding a cease-fire in Gaza and Lebanon.
Meanwhile, political tensions mount as the left-wing opposition prepares to censure the government, with impeachment proceedings against Macron set to be examined in early October.
