MERCEDEZ-BENZ TO INTRODUCE HIGH-SPEED AUTONOMOUS DRIVING ON GERMAN MOTORWAYS

German automaker Mercedes-Benz announced on Monday that its cars equipped with its autonomous driving system will soon be able to operate at speeds of up to 95 km per hour on German motorways.

The company expected to receive certification for this system from the German motor transport authorities by the end of this year, with sales set to commence in early 2025.

Under the Mercedes system, vehicles will function with level 3, or conditional driving automation, allowing drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel. The carmaker said that, based on requirements for safety, it would gradually increase the system’s speed capability to 130 km per hour by 2030, which is the current maximum speed permitted for conditionally automated driving in Germany.

The automotive industry classifies autonomous driving into five levels, from driver assistance to full automation, with level 3 considered a critical milestone for this technology.

Mercedes-Benz has been testing its level 3 autonomous driving system in closed areas in China since 2021 and announced plans to conduct tests on designated highways in Beijing at the end of last year.

Noting that China is very “safety-conscious,” Markus Schaefer, chief technology officer of Mercedes-Benz, said that approvals for level 3 systems for broader use are expected to happen very quickly there, with rapid expansions following. “We know how quickly the market moves in China,” he added.
