Tue 17 September 2024:
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, announced on Monday that it is blocking RT (formerly Russia Today), Rossiya Segodnya, and other Russian state-controlled media outlets from its platforms. The ban, which targets entities involved in foreign interference activities, is part of Meta’s broader strategy to curb disinformation on a global scale.
“After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets. Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity,” it said in a statement.

U.S. Sanctions Fuel Meta’s Action
The decision follows U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s announcement of sanctions against RT and other Russian state media. Blinken accused these outlets of using cyber tactics and covert information operations to influence global audiences and assist in military procurement. “Today, we’re exposing how Russia uses these tactics worldwide,” Blinken stated. “Russian weaponization of disinformation to subvert and polarize free and open societies extends to every part of the world,” he added.
Earlier this month, U.S. authorities unveiled charges against two RT employees, seizing 32 internet domains in connection with alleged interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Despite these accusations, Russia has consistently denied any attempts to meddle in foreign elections, dismissing the claims as baseless.
