Fri 05 November 2021:
Mexico announced Thursday that it had seized the largest seizure of pure fentanyl in its history, after five suspected drug traffickers and 260 pounds (118 kilograms) of the synthetic painkiller were apprehended at a lab.
Fentanyl is 50 times more powerful than heroin, and counterfeit oxycodone pills require only a trace amount.
The lab discovered on Oct. 28 in the northern city of Culiacan, according to the Mexican army, probably produced roughly 70 million blue fentanyl tablets every month for the Sinaloa cartel.
“This seizure of pure fentanyl is considered the largest in history,” the Defense Department said in a statement.
The counterfeit tablets, called “Mexican oxy,” are so poorly made that some contain almost no fentanyl while others have a lethal amount.
In 2019, around 50,000 people died from opioid overdoses in the United States, with synthetic opioids accounting for the majority of them.
