Tue 07 October 2025:

KwaZulu-Natal’s top cop, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is set to testify before a parliamentary ad hoc committee over his claims of political interference in the justice system.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will appear before Parliament on Tuesday. He is the first witness in a probe into his allegations of widespread political interference in the criminal justice system.

The ad hoc committee will hold public hearings over the next two days. Mkhwanazi’s appearance follows his recent testimony at the Madlanga Commission, a separate inquiry that is also looking into his allegations.

The hearings in Cape Town have attracted significant public attention. Security has been increased around the parliamentary venue. The committee is chaired by ANC MP Soviet Lekganyane. Other prominent members include the DA’s Glynnis Breytenbach and the EFF’s Julius Malema.

The committee has a 30-day deadline to complete its work. However, with over 30 potential witnesses, this timeline seems ambitious. The parliamentary probe aims to establish political accountability and recommend reforms.

Key figures and controversies

The parliamentary committee is not without its own drama. Mkhwanazi previously accused DA MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard, a committee member, of leaking classified information at the Madlanga Commission. Kohler-Barnard has denied this.

EFF leader Julius Malema has also voiced concerns. He warned against staff “gatekeeping” public submissions to the committee. He called any rejection of submissions an “abuse of power”.

Mkhwanazi’s allegations have implicated several high-profile figures. He accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of interference. He also claimed the late former minister Nathi Mthethwa tried to stop Richard Mdluli’s prosecution. These serious claims form the basis of the work to be done by the parliamentary committee.
