MORE THAN 200 ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDERS KILLED GLOBALLY IN 2020

According to an international rights organization, at least 227 land and environmental activists were killed globally in 2020.

“Over half of attacks took place in just three countries: Colombia, Mexico and the Philippines,” Global Witness said in a report.

According to the research, Colombia had the largest number of murders in 2020, with 65 land and environmental activists killed.

Last year, the group said it documented 30 deadly attacks against land and environmental activists in Mexico, up 67% from the previous year.

Meanwhile, 29 environmental activists were killed in the Philippines, with over half of the attacks clearly tied to their opposition to mining, logging, and dam projects, according to the report.

Between 2016 and 2020, 166 land and environmental activists were killed in the Philippines, according to the rights group.

According to the report, land and environmental activists were killed in 19 other nations, including three in Indonesia.
