Fri 12 July 2024:
Rescuers in Nepal have paused their search for 51 missing passengers after a landslide pushed their buses into a swollen river, authorities reported. Initially, officials believed 62 people were missing after the incident in Chitwan district, 86 km (53 miles) west of Kathmandu, but revised the number to 51 after gathering passenger details from bus operators.

Three passengers survived with minor injuries by jumping off the buses before the landslide hit, authorities said. Despite efforts from hundreds of security personnel and over two dozen divers, no signs of the buses or passengers were found.
“We will resume the search tomorrow morning,” stated Chitwan Deputy Administrator Khimananda Bhusal as dusk fell. Images on social media showed rescue boats navigating the fast-flowing, mud-brown Trishuli River.

Among the missing passengers are seven Indian nationals, according to district official Antim Sinjali. Since mid-June, landslides and floods caused by heavy monsoon rains have claimed at least 91 lives in Nepal. Over the past 24 hours alone, lightning strikes, floods, and landslides have resulted in 17 deaths across the country, police reported on Friday evening.
