Wed 08 May 2024:
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated on Tuesday that if Kyiv chooses to attack Russian territory using UK-supplied weaponry, Moscow retains the right to attack British military installations in both Ukraine and “and abroad,” Anadolu Agency reported.
“If such a scenario is implemented, then our country, the Russian Federation, reserves the right to respond accordingly. That is to use as a target British facilities located both on the territory of Ukraine and abroad — military facilities, weapons, and so on,” Zakharova said in an interview with the Russian state news agency TASS.
She described recent remarks by British Foreign Secretary David Cameron that London considered it legitimate for Kyiv to use British weapons for strikes on Russian territory as “absolutely insane” and “illogical.”
“We reacted immediately through summoning the British ambassador. In fact, Russia did not just summon him for a reprimand, but absolutely unambiguously responded to the British ambassador over the statements in question,” she said.
On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the summoning of British Ambassador Nigel Casey, saying it conveyed to him a strong protest in connection with Cameron’s words about Ukraine’s right to strike at the territory of the Russian Federation using British weapons.
Putin orders nuclear drills with troops near Ukraine
Russia said on Monday it would hold a military exercise that will include practice for the use of tactical nuclear weapons after what the defence ministry said were provocative threats from Western officials.
The ministry said the exercise was ordered by President Vladimir Putin and would test the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces to perform combat missions.
The military drills will include practice for the preparation and deployment for use of non-strategic nuclear weapons, the defence ministry said. Missile formations in the Southern Military District and naval forces will take part.
“During the exercise, a set of measures will be carried out to practice the issues of preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons,” the ministry said.
The exercise is aimed at ensuring Russia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty “in response to provocative statements and threats by certain Western officials against the Russian Federation”, it said.
It did not name the officials. But Russia has repeatedly said that remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron about a possible French intervention in Ukraine are extremely dangerous.
