A majority of Americans aren’t on board with Donald Trump’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 54 percent disapprove of how he’s handling the situation, with that number soaring to 84 percent among Democrats.

The survey also revealed that only 40 percent of Americans see Israel as a close ally, while 28 percent describe the relationship as merely “friendly but not close”.

“Take over”

Trump took a strongly pro-Israel stance, diverging from decades of U.S. policy aiming for a balanced two-state solution. In his first term (2017–2021), he recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moved the U.S. Embassy there in 2018, a move cheered by Israel but condemned by Palestinians as it undermined their claim to East Jerusalem.

He also recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights in 2019 and declared Israeli settlements in the West Bank legal, reversing prior U.S. positions. His administration cut funding to Palestinian refugees and closed the PLO office in Washington, weakening Palestinian leadership.

In 2020, Trump unveiled his “Peace to Prosperity” plan, crafted by Jared Kushner. It proposed a Palestinian state but heavily favored Israel—allowing annexation of West Bank settlements, denying Palestinians a military, and placing their capital on Jerusalem’s outskirts. Palestinians rejected it outright.

Trump also brokered the Abraham Accords, normalizing ties between Israel and several Arab states, bypassing the Palestinian issue entirely.

Since returning to office in 2025, Trump’s floated a controversial idea to “take over” Gaza, suggesting Palestinians be relocated to Egypt and Jordan while the U.S. rebuilds it into a “Middle Eastern Riviera.” This has drawn accusations of ethnic cleansing, though his team’s backtracked, saying no troops or permanent displacement are planned—yet.
