Tue 16 July 2024:

Mount Etna, situated on the island of Sicily in Italy, erupted again, spewing ash clouds and streams of molten lava. The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported that the Voragine crater, which had recently been active, began erupting ash and lava on Monday night.

The INGV noted, “Lava flows were observed on the slopes of the volcano due to the lava emitted from the Voragine crater, and the ash reached a height of approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles).”

Local news sources reported ash falling on nearby settlements, including Viagrande and Aci Castello. Due to the volcanic activity, tours to points at and above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) on Mount Etna have been temporarily halted.

Previously, the INGV reported that the height of the Voragine crater, frequently erupting ash and lava in recent days, had reached 3,369 meters (11,000 feet) due to accumulated lava, marking the highest point of the volcano.
