Tue 13 May 2025:
Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in southern Italy, erupted overnight, spewing large amounts of ash and lava, local media reported on Tuesday.
The eruption, which began from the Southeast Crater, involved frequent and intense explosions, releasing two small lava flows directed toward the south and east, Catania Today reported.
An ash plume was also observed, drifting southeast and depositing volcanic ash on the nearby town of Zafferana Etnea.
The Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) issued by INGV has since been downgraded to “green,” the lowest alert level. Authorities confirmed that the eruption had no effect on operations at Catania’s Vincenzo Bellini International Airport.
Located on the island of Sicily, Etna is the highest active volcano in continental Europe at around 3,300 meters. This latest eruption marks the 13th recorded volcanic activity in recent months. Intense volcanic activity was observed at Mount Etna in February and April of this year.
Mount Etna, located on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, standing at about 3,350 meters (10,990 feet).

Formed over millions of years through tectonic activity along the convergent boundary where the African plate subducts beneath the Eurasian plate, Etna is a stratovolcano, characterized by its steep, conical shape built from layers of lava, ash, and pyroclastic material.
It has been erupting for over 500,000 years, with frequent activity recorded since ancient times—over 200 eruptions since 1500 BCE. Its eruptions range from gentle lava flows to explosive events, driven by magma rich in gas and silica, which makes it viscous and prone to spectacular displays.
Etna’s activity is monitored closely due to its proximity to populated areas like Catania. It has four summit craters and numerous flank vents, with eruptions often producing lava fountains, ash clouds, and slow-moving lava flows that can threaten nearby towns and agriculture.
The fertile volcanic soil supports vineyards and orchards, making the region economically vital despite the risks. Etna’s eruptions also impact air travel, as ash plumes can disrupt flights across Europe.
Culturally, Etna holds a mythical status, linked to stories of the Greek god Hephaestus and the monster Typhon. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing scientists and tourists for its geological significance and dramatic beauty. Recent eruptions, like those in 2024 and early 2025, show it remains highly active, with ongoing research into its behavior to improve hazard prediction.
