Sun 27 August 2023:
Muzaffarnagar school teacher Tripta Tyagi, who is booked by the cops regarding the incident of making communal remarks and ordering her students to slap a Muslim classmate for not doing his homework, has told a news channel that “she is not ashamed” of her actions.
Speaking to NDTV, Tyagi said that she has served the people of the community as a teacher and that it is important to ‘control’ children at school.
“They have made laws, but we need to control the children in schools. This is how we tackle them,” Tyagi said.
Tyagi had earlier dismissed the row over the viral video as a ‘minor issue’. “This wasn’t my intention. I am accepting my mistake, but this was unnecessarily turned into a big issue”, she had said.
Tyagi said that while she was wrong to have a student slapped by his classmates, she was obliged to do so because she is “handicapped and was unable to rise up and approach the kid who had not completed his task.”
She also said the video has been tampered with in order to stoke tensions. She claimed that the video was shot by an uncle of the boy.
The police have registered a case after a complaint from the boy’s family under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) — both non-cognisable offences.
The offences are bailable in nature and do not lead to immediate arrest, and require a warrant.
The school was also served a notice by the education department in connection with the matter.
