Thu 16 October 2025:

According to official Home Office statistics, 45% of all religious hate crimes in England and Wales (excluding London) recorded in the last year targeted Muslims — a 20% increase.

The official statistics, released last week, show that Muslims were disproportionately targeted as victims of hate crimes in England and Wales in the year ending March 2025.

Hate crimes against Muslims rose by almost a fifth (20%), with the Home Office noting a “clear spike” in Islamophobic offences since the Southport murders and riots last summer.

The statistics recorded 7,164 offences reported by police forces across England and Wales, but excluded the Metropolitan Police, the UK’s largest police force. This means that anti-Muslim hate crimes in England and Wales are probably much higher.

The overall number of offences recorded rose by 3% from the previous 12 months, constituting the highest annual total of offences ever recorded.

Hate crimes against Jewish people accounted for 29% of all recorded offences with 2,873 hate crimes recorded against Jews. Hate crimes against Jewish members of the population also dropped by 18%, excluding those recorded by the Met Police.

Whereas for Muslims, the overall total of crimes was much higher (4,478).

A hate crime is defined as an offence targeting someone’s race, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “Jewish and Muslim communities continue to experience unacceptable levels of often violent hate crime.”

Adding to the alarming rise in hate crimes against Muslims, Mahmood added: “Today’s hate crime statistics show that too many people are living in fear because of who they are, what they believe, or where they come from…

“We have stepped up our police patrols at synagogues and mosques following the abhorrent attack in Manchester last week, and I am working closely with faith leaders, providing £50 million to keep places of worship safe and make sure they remain sanctuaries, not targets of hatred.”

Doubt over underreported statistics

Various Muslim charities have also expressed their concerns and criticisms of the government’s silence on the disproportionate targeting of Muslims in hate crime offences.

The exclusion of Met Police statistics due to a change in their crime recording system has also led members of both the Jewish and Muslim communities to believe that the statistics are not wholly representative of the level of hate crimes committed.

The Southport murders in July 2024 marked a sharp spike in hate crimes against Muslims, after then 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana murdered three children in a dance workshop.

The outrage that followed triggered the Islamophobic Southport riots, in which far-right protesters wrongfully spread false information that the attack was carried out by a Muslim.

Since then, countless far-right protests and crimes have broken out against Muslims and immigrants, one of the most alarming recent incidents being the Peacehaven Mosque arson attack.
