Tue 16 November 2021:
According to state media, Myanmar’s military junta charged former leader Aung San Suu Kyi with fraud during the 2020 elections, which her party won by a landslide.
Suu Kyi was charged with “election fraud and lawless actions,” according to Myanmar’s state-run publication Global New Light, which did not specify when court hearings would begin.
The same claim was leveled against fifteen other officials, including former president Win Myint and the chairman of the electoral commission, according to the study.
Myanmar has been in upheaval since a military coup in February spurred national protests and a bloody crackdown on dissent.
Suu Kyi, 76, has been detained since the putsch and faces a number of allegations, including illegally importing walkie-talkies, sedition, and corruption. If convicted, she risks decades in prison.
She is already on trial for violating coronavirus limitations while campaigning for her National League for Democracy (NLD), which defeated a military-aligned party in the election.
The 2020 elections, according to international observers, were substantially free and fair.
The junta has threatened to disband the NLD, and Win Htein, a close Suu Kyi aide and high-ranking official, was sentenced to 20 years in prison last month on treason charges.
According to a local monitoring group, Myanmar junta security forces have killed over 1,250 individuals and imprisoned over 10,000 since the coup.
