A mosque in Scotland has increased security measures after a far-right teenager who pretended to be a Muslim admitted to plotting a mass-casualty attack on worshippers.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested last year after police uncovered his plan to lock worshippers inside the Inverclyde Muslim Centre in Greenock and set the building on fire. He had also intended to livestream the attack.

According to prosecutors, the boy had been radicalised by neo-Nazi and far-right extremist material since the age of 13. He idolised white supremacist mass killers including Anders Breivik, and expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

In preparation for the attack, he pretended to convert to Islam to gain the trust of the mosque’s congregation, even being welcomed inside by the imam. He carried out surveillance of the premises, drew sketches of the building layout, and drafted a manifesto declaring that he would “die for my land.”

Police Scotland said the teenager planned to carry out the massacre using aerosol cans as makeshift flamethrowers, a BB-firing air pistol, and gas cartridges. He intended to trap up to 275 worshippers inside the mosque before setting it on fire.

On the day of the planned attack, the teenager travelled to the mosque but was unable to gain entry because the doors were locked. Officers moved in and arrested him, recovering weapons and extremist material including Mein Kampf, swastika-marked notepads, and bomb-making instructions. Further searches uncovered chemicals and explosive components at his home.

Hamid Akhtar, from the Inverclyde Muslim Centre, described the incident as “frightening” and a “wake-up call” that prompted the mosque to install extra CCTV cameras and review its security protocols. “It has made us more vigilant, but our community remains strong and united,” he said.

At Glasgow High Court, the teenager pleaded guilty to preparing an act of terrorism and to possessing information useful to someone preparing a terrorist act. Sentencing has been deferred while reports are prepared, and he remains in a secure facility.

Adeel Naeen, another member of the mosque, said worshippers had refused to be intimidated. “The community is still strong,” he said. “We will continue to come together in worship and solidarity.”
