Wed 17 July 2024:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son, Yair Netanyahu, has accused Qatar of being “one of the biggest sponsors of state terrorism.”
This accusation has provoked strong reactions from Gulf emirate leaders, one of whom labelled the claims as “irresponsible lies and nonsense,” according to Haaretz.
Yair’s remarks come at a sensitive time in the hostage-ceasefire negotiations, where Doha is playing a key mediating role, with one official warning that his statements could “complicate” the talks.

In a recording revealed by Walla, Yair can be heard speaking at an Evangelical Church conference panel in Miami, Florida, where he has been residing for several months. “You have another sponsor of terrorism, which is Qatar,” he told the audience. “It is a wealthy country that, for some reason, receives red carpet treatment in Washington and New York, but they are the second-largest financiers of terrorism in the world after Iran.”
The prime minister’s son also alleged that Doha is “the biggest donor to American universities,” implying a link between Qatari funding and recent pro-Palestine student protests on college campuses. He criticised “radical left funding and the [George] Soros organisations” for organising these protests against Israel. “But Israel is not their real target,” he claimed.
“Their real target is bringing down the social fabric of the United States. Israel is just an experiment for seeing how well this army of bullies and rioters will work when they really want to use them.”
Notably, Yair’s did not mention the 120 Israeli prisoners of war held in Gaza, whom Qatari leaders are working to free through a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.
A senior Qatari official, speaking to Walla, dismissed Netanyahu’s accusations as “lies and irresponsible nonsense,” noting that the timing of his remarks, amid critical negotiations, “can only complicate matters.”
“Yair Netanyahu’s words seemed to have been copied straight from the playbook of extremist organisations that are hostile and opposed to any peaceful solution to the crisis in Gaza,” the diplomat told Walla. “These false claims will not take the pressure off those who prefer to continue the war.”
The official also addressed the allegations about Qatari funding of American universities, clarifying that such payments are not donations but expenses for the universities’ satellite campuses in Qatar. “Qatar has no involvement in the recent campus demonstrations in the US,” the official added.
According to the Times of Israel, Yair Netanyahu has been living in Florida since last year after his parents reportedly demanded he stop posting on social media and avoid direct communication with lawmakers or ministers. This move followed accusations that he was inflaming tensions in Israel and worsening a diplomatic rift with the United States.
In addition to his controversial social media presence, which has led to legal action, Yair has faced criticism for staying in the US despite the outbreak of war, while tens of thousands of Israelis returned home to join the 360,000 reservists initially called up.
