World’s largest producer of smartphones will reveal its latest range of mobile phones at in New York on Wednesday
The impending launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 series is probably the last chance this year for the company to impress smartphone enthusiasts and to boost its dipping profit in the mobile business.
Weighed down by slower sales of flagship models such as the Note 9 and S series and increased marketing expenses, Samsung’s profit from its mobile business slipped 42 per cent in the second quarter.
The National evaluates what to expect from the Note 10 line-up to be unveiled at Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday.
Will it be brand new or only slightly upgraded?
Unlike last year, when Samsung launched only one variant of its Note series, the South Korean manufacturer is expected to expand its line-up this time by launching two models – Note 10 and Note 10+. Design-wise, it could disappoint users as Note 10 phones are not expected to offer many innovations when compared with their predecessor, the Note 9. According to sources, Note 10 will come with a 16.3-centimetre active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (amoled) screen, while the Note 10+ will have a 16.8cm display. Amoled screens provide images with brighter and higher resolutions than conventional light-emitting diode screens.
How many cameras?
Note 10 series phones are likely to come with a vertical three-camera array, as opposed to a horizontal three-camera array in Note 9, on the rear. As with the Galaxy S10 5G model, there will be an additional 3D-depth camera. There will also be a small, cut-out in the top centre of the screen to contain a front camera.
Why is Samsung pinning high hopes on Note 10?
In its second-quarter earnings reported last week, Samsung posted flagging sales on weak momentum for the Galaxy S10 and stagnant demand for premium products. It said the company would primarily focus on the launch of Note 10 series in a bid to increase profit in the coming months. Armed with innovative features such as wireless charging, strong sales of its Note 10 series could significantly improve the Samsung’s profit in the second half of the year.
A camera built in the stylus pen, is it possible?
Samsung is expected to install a camera with optical zooming capabilities into the stylus, known as the S Pen. Using Bluetooth, S Pen will send images or videos back to the phone. In February, Samsung was granted patent to use the S Pen as a camera. The camera will be in the top part of the stylus and light will pass through a lens fixed on the side of the S Pen.
When will the Note 10 line-up be available in the UAE?
The Galaxy Note 10 series is expected to be available in the last week of August across all major retailers and Samsung stores in the UAE. However, it will be available in the US and selected markets in Europe by the second or third week of this month.
How much will it cost?
Industry experts expect the price of the Samsung Note 10 to start from Dh3,486 and for the Note 10+ from Dh4,000.
