NEW YORK MAYOR ACCUSED OF ACCEPTING FUNDS FROM TURKIYE

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been charged with bribery and fraud after allegedly receiving illegal campaign donations from the Turkish government, according to an indictment unsealed today.

Eric Adams has been indicted on five federal charges, including bribery, wire fraud, and conspiracy. The charges, stemming from activities since 2014, allege that Adams accepted luxury travel and other benefits from foreign nationals, including Turkish officials, in exchange for political favors.

The indictment accuses him of pressuring the NYC Fire Department to bypass safety inspections for a Turkish consular building. Adams denies wrongdoing, stating his intent to defend himself while continuing his mayoral duties

Adams, who was elected three years ago, has denied wrongdoing. In a video he said if the Federal Government charges him, “these charges will be entirely false, based on lies.”

“I know I am innocent,” he added.

The indictment alleges Mayor Adams “not only accepted, but sought illegal campaign contributions to his 2021 mayoral campaign, as well as other things of value, from foreign nationals.”

After winning the 2021 Democratic mayoral primary, Adams successfully pressed city officials to allow the opening of a Manhattan high-rise housing the Turkish Consulate General even though it did not fully comply with city’s fire regulations. During the investigation, FBI agents raided the home of Adams’ top fundraiser and siezed the mayor’s two phones and iPad in November last year.
