Mon 24 June 2024:
Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) announced on Monday that patient data was published online following a severe ransomware attack on the Synnovis diagnostics service, used by several major London hospitals earlier this month.
NHS England stated that Synnovis, a partnership between the hospitals and the German company Synlab, is conducting further investigations to understand the full extent of the data breach and its impact on patients.
Initial analysis by Synnovis confirmed that a cybercrime group had stolen data from their systems. It may take weeks to determine which individuals have been affected.
NHS England noted that there is currently no evidence that the cyber criminals have published the Laboratory Information Management System database, which contains patient test requests and results, but investigations are ongoing.
The BBC reported last week that the criminal group behind the attack attempted to extort money from Synnovis, threatening to release data if unpaid. The BBC saw a sample of the stolen data, which included patients’ names, dates of birth, NHS numbers, and blood test descriptions.
Services at major London hospitals, including Guy’s, St Thomas’, and King’s, have been disrupted due to the attack. Local health systems are working together to manage the impact on patients, ensuring urgent blood samples can still be processed and laboratories can access historic patient records.
