NIGERIA RESTORES POWER AFTER NATIONWIDE GRID COLLAPSE

Thu 14  September 2023:

On Thursday, Nigeria had a statewide power outage due to technical issues in the country’s electrical grid, the West African nation’s electricity distribution companies reported.

Multiple grid failures have occurred in recent years, and the most recent one occurred on Thursday, affecting all 36 of Nigeria’s states as well as the nation’s capital, Abuja, before electricity was restored throughout the majority of the country.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which supplies electricity to southeastern Nigeria, issued a statement announcing a “total system” collapse. “Due to this development … we are unable to provide service to our customers,” company spokesperson Emeka Ezeh said.

A fire in one of the country’s power plants led to “sharp drops in frequency” that resulted in grid failure early Thursday, Adebayo Adebulu, Nigeria’s minister of power, said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“The fire has been fully arrested, and over half of the connections are now up and the rest will be fully restored in no time,” Adebulu said Thursday afternoon.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which supplies electricity to southeastern Nigeria, earlier issued a statement announcing a “total system” collapse.

“Due to this development, … we are unable to provide service to our customers,” company spokesperson Emeka Ezeh said.

Oil-rich yet energy-deficient Nigeria generates an average of 4,000 megawatts of power per day for a population of more than 210 million people, well short of the 30,000 megawatts per day required by authorities.

Because of the insufficient power supply, millions of residents have to depend on gasoline-powered generators for power. However, gasoline costs have more than doubled this year as a result of the government’s suspension of decades-long subsidies, and many households and companies have struggled to find an alternate source of power supply.

In 2022, Nigeria’s grid collapsed at least four times, which authorities blamed on technical problems.
