Tue 23 July 2024:
Nigerian artist and medical doctor Fola David is aiming to set a Guinness World Record for the largest drawing by an individual. David spent six days working on his 1,050 square meter artwork titled “Unity in Diversity” at a stadium in Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria.
Celebrating Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage
The artwork, depicting two giant hands holding Nigeria’s map, is intended to showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, comprises about 250 ethnic groups, with a roughly equal split between Muslims and Christians, often leading to ethnic tensions.
“Our diversity should be seen as something that unites us, as something that strengthens us, rather than something that should create that divide between us,” David said upon completing his work on Sunday night.
Support from Notable Personalities and Institutions
David has garnered support from prominent Nigerian figures, including Peter Obi of the Labour Party, former Guinness World Record holder Hilda Baci, and Farooq Oreagba, who gained attention at the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival. Additionally, the administration of the College of Medicine University of Lagos (CMUL), where David is an alumnus, visited to show their support.
