NOBEL PEACE PRIZE CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED: NORWEGIAN NOBEL COMMITTEE

Sun 11 January 2026:

The Norwegian Nobel Institute said the Peace Prize cannot be transferred, following remarks by Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who suggested she might give her 2025 award to US President Donald Trump.

“The facts are clear and well established. Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and stands for all time,” it said Friday.

The prize was awarded to Machado for her efforts to defend democratic rights and promote a peaceful transition from authoritarian rule to democracy in Venezuela.

Machado said during an interview with Fox News on Monday that handing the prize to Trump would be an act of gratitude from Venezuelans for the US raid in their country.

The US carried out a Jan. 3 military operation that captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

“I’ve heard that she wants to do that. That to be a great honor,” Trump responded when asked if he would accept the prize if she wanted to hand it to him.

Donald Trump’s obsession with the Nobel Peace Prize boils down to a mix of deep-seated personal insecurity, lifelong craving for elite validation, and a specific grudge against Barack Obama.

It started prominently during his first term (around 2018–2020) when he began publicly complaining that he “deserved” the Nobel Peace Prize — especially for brokering deals like the Abraham Accords — while repeatedly pointing out that Obama received it in 2009 after just nine months in office, basically for “doing nothing” (in Trump’s view). He has said variations of: “If I were named Obama, I would have had the Nobel Prize given to me in 10 seconds.”This resentment has persisted for nearly a decade.

Trump sees the prize as the ultimate symbol of prestige — a shiny gold medal that would “prove” he’s the greatest peacemaker ever. In his second term (2025 onward), the fixation intensified: he repeatedly claimed to have “ended” or “stopped” six, seven, or even eight wars (from Ukraine to various regional conflicts), boasted about nominations from allies like Netanyahu, and expressed frustration that the “elites” in Norway would “never” give it to him despite his efforts.

Analysts and former aides describe it as more than vanity — it’s about legacy, outdoing predecessors (especially Obama), and needing constant external praise to feed his self-image. Even after not winning in 2025 (when the prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado), Trump kept pushing the issue, suggesting she could “hand” him the prize during a visit and calling the snub a “very big embarrassment.”
