Sat 02 May 2020:
Kim Jong Un on Friday attended a ribbon-cutting event at the Sunchon fertilizer factory, in the North Korean leader’s first public appearance in 21 days, according to the country’s official news agency.
For three weeks the world has wondered what had happened to the North Korean leader, after CNN first reported that U.S. intelligence was monitoring reports that Kim was gravely ill.
Rumours about Kim’s health have been swirling since his conspicuous no-show at April 15 celebrations for the birthday of his grandfather, the North’s founder — the most important day in the country’s political calendar.
His absence triggered a series of fevered rumours and unconfirmed reports over his condition, while the United States and South Korea insisted they had no information to believe any of the conjecture was true.
On 22 April U.S. President Donald Trump was uncertain as to the veracity of the reports, but wished him well. “If he is in the kind of condition that the reports say, that would be very serious condition,” the president told a White House news conference at the time.
“I just hope he’s doing fine. I’ve had a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un. And I’d like to see him do well. We’ll see how he does. We don’t know if the reports are true.”
KCNA said Kim had conducted the inspection visit at the factory, 50 kilometers north of Pyongyang, on Friday to mark May 1’s International Labor Day.
