The former president has released his first statement since the incident.
“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!” he wrote in a campaign email to supporters.
I will NEVER SURRENDER!” he added.
“I will always love you for supporting me.Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again,” he wrote.
Trump had seen a massive fundraising spike following the attack in July.
Trump was golfing at his West Palm Springs resort in Florida when the incident occurred around 2pm local time (18:00 GMT).
The Secret Service has said there were reports of gunfire in Trump’s vicinity, but that he was unharmed. His campaign also said there had been gunfire near Trump, and he was safe.
The Associated Press, citing law enforcement sources, reported that Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm on the outskirts of the golf course.
The person fled in an SUV and was later apprehended in a nearby county by local law enforcement, the sources said. It was not immediately clear if the individual had fired at Trump.
An AK-style firearm was recovered at the scene near Trump’s golf course, law enforcement officials told the news agency.
Local authorities have said there were no injuries in the incident.
The former president has had stepped-up security measures since the assassination attempt in July.
When he has been at Trump Tower in New York, a lineup of dump trucks has been parked along a wall outside the building.
At outdoor rallies, he now speaks from behind an enclosure of bullet-proof glass.
Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s top allies, has said that he spoke with the former president and Republican presidential candidate and that he is in “good spirits”.
He called Trump “one of the strongest people I’ve ever known”.

Few details are known about today’s incident, but Donald Trump Jr has already tied it to the assassination attempt against his father at a rally in Pennsylvania in July.
“Again folks!” Trump’s oldest son posted on social media.
