Sun 12 May 2024:

A recent study conducted by World Wide Worx reveals a remarkable surge in South Africa’s online retail sector, reaching a staggering R71 billion in the previous year.

In collaboration with Mastercard, Peach Payments, and Ask Afrika, the study highlights the growing prominence of platforms such as Checkers 60, Woolworths Dash, and Pick n Pay’s ASAP, which have become staple choices for numerous e-shoppers. The increasing efficiency and security of these platforms contribute significantly to their popularity.

However, despite this upward trajectory, retailers are encountering various operational hurdles. Challenges such as payment failures and the effective management of customer queries and complaints persist.

Despite customers’ willingness to engage in online transactions, the report indicates that over 50 percent of card transactions are still declined. Nevertheless, for those with the means, online shopping offers significant cost savings compared to traditional in-store purchases.

The TGI Survey, conducted among 16,000 South African consumers, found that 20% of consumers had found the online medium gave them more choice and variety. However, only 18.6% regarded it as safe and secure to shop online.

Goldstuck said the overall findings provided a powerful indication of continued future growth: “This comprehensive report not only reflects the current state of online retail but also forecasts continued robust growth in the sector, partially driven by the arrival of Amazon.com in the local market,” he said.
