Tue 10 September 2024:

The devastating conflict between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group has claimed over 20,000 lives since it erupted in April 2023, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

During a two-day visit to Sudan, Ghebreyesus highlighted the staggering toll at a press conference in Port Sudan, emphasizing that 10 million people have been displaced within the country, while an additional two million have fled to neighboring nations.

“The scale of the emergency is shocking, as is the insufficient action being taken to curtail the conflict and respond to the suffering it is causing,” Ghebreyesus said, pointing to the dire need for global intervention. Nearly half of Sudan’s 25 million residents are in urgent need of assistance, with 70% of the country’s health services now out of commission.

Calling for international action, he urged the “world to wake up and help Sudan out of the nightmare it is living through.”

On Saturday, Ghebreyesus reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to tackling the critical humanitarian crises in Sudan, including rampant insecurity, widespread displacement, floods, famine, and outbreaks of disease.
