OVER 700,000 NOW DISPLACED IN HAITI AMID ESCALATING CRISIS, UN REPORTS

More than 700,000 people are currently internally displaced in Haiti, marking a 22% increase since June, according to the latest figures from the International Organization for Migration, shared by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric. Over half of the displaced population are children, highlighting the severe impact of escalating gang violence and the deepening humanitarian crisis in the country.

Approximately three-quarters of those displaced have sought shelter outside of Port-au-Prince, with nearly half residing in the Grand Sud region. In the capital, where security remains highly unstable, about a quarter of the displaced live in overcrowded sites, with limited access to essential services, Dujarric added during a UN briefing.

Education Severely Disrupted as UN Steps In to Support Back-to-School Efforts

With the start of the school year in Haiti, UN humanitarian partners are working closely with local authorities to support the national back-to-school campaign. Nearly 1.4 million students and teachers have experienced severe educational disruptions due to ongoing violence. The UN Children’s Fund is providing support through cash transfers, school kit distribution, and efforts to rehabilitate schools for displaced children.

Despite the UN’s efforts, response initiatives remain significantly underfunded. Dujarric noted that only 30% of the $30 million needed for education support in Haiti has been secured, and the overall humanitarian response plan for the country is only 39% funded, with $264 million received out of the required $674 million for life-saving aid.
