Sat 17 August 2024:
A groundbreaking study has revealed that approximately 4.4 billion people across the globe do not have access to safe drinking water. This alarming statistic was published on Thursday in the Science journal by a team of researchers, including Esther Greenwood from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology.
According to the British scientific journal Nature, over half of the world’s population is struggling to access clean, drinkable water. The study highlighted that nearly half of those without safe water are in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

A Call to Action
“There’s an urgent need for the situation to change,” Greenwood stressed, underlining the critical need for immediate action to address this global issue.
In 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF reported that 2.2 billion people were without safe drinking water, highlighting the growing severity of the crisis. The United Nations has recognized access to safe drinking water as a human right since 2015.
In addition to the global crisis, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has further exacerbated water insecurity. The WHO has raised alarms about potential polio outbreaks due to the rapidly deteriorating sanitation conditions in the region, underscoring the dire need for a sustainable solution to the water crisis.
