Mon 15 July 2024:

Pakistan’s government is seeking to ban the party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Monday, a decision poised to escalate the country’s political turmoil.

Khan, 72, ousted through a no-trust vote in April 2021, is currently in a jail in Rawalpindi with his wife, facing multiple corruption and violence-related charges. The former cricketer-turned-politician has been acquitted in two of three cases, while the third conviction remains suspended.

At a news conference in Islamabad, Tarar announced the government’s plan to approach the Supreme Court for approval to ban Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), following Cabinet endorsement—a legal necessity.

“Pakistan and the PTI cannot progress together. And a series of recent events have proved this,” Tarar stated. “That’s why the government is going to ban the PTI,” he added, indicating the process would start soon.

Tarar cited PTI’s alleged involvement in attacks on military installations in May last year after Khan’s brief arrest in a corruption case, accusations of receiving “prohibited” funding, and efforts to undermine a government-IMF deal as reasons for the ban.

Additionally, the government plans to file a review petition with the Supreme Court against its recent verdict affirming PTI’s eligibility for reserved seats for women and minorities. PTI-backed candidates had secured the most seats in the February 8 elections.
