Pakistan Military has confirmed three militants have been killed after they stormed a five star hotel in Pakistan and opened fire. ‘Three to five terrorists’ were said to have entered the building, where they killed a security guard at the gate before reaching the first floor of the Pearl Continental Hotel in the Gwadar Port. Gunfire was reported in and around the hotel, which was cordoned off.
Pakistan Defence Command said the gunmen were firing from the first floor, with the army and navy drafted in to bring the situation under control. Balochistan Home Minister Ziaullah Langove said there appeared to be casualties but there were no immediate details. The military confirmed that “at least three gunmen kill guard at entrance to luxury hotel”. In an earlier tweet, the command added that “all foreign and local guests staying in the hotel have been safely evacuated” but later said “90% of guests have been evacuated”. It is unclear how many people were at the hotel when the attack happened at 4.50pm local time (11.50am GMT).
It comes just weeks after 14 people, including 11 security personnel, were killed by gunmen near Ormara in Gwadar. Balochistan is Pakistan’s poorest and least developed province, and is the focal point of a multi-billion dollar Chinese investment project. Gwadar, which lies on the Arabian Sea, is a strategic port being developed as part of the $60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is part of China’s mammoth Belt and Road infrastructure project.
