POLAND TO BAN CELLPHONE USE FOR UNDER-16S IN SCHOOLS

Poland will ban cellphone use for minors under 16 in the nation’s schools, the education minister announced Wednesday.

“We are currently finalizing work on a major legislative change, crucial for schools, which will result in a ban on mobile phone use in primary schools from September 1, 2026,” Barbara Nowacka told reporters, according to public broadcaster TVP World.

She said that using phones in school “cannot be the norm because we see how dependent children are on the internet.”

The move comes amid similar measures in countries worldwide, including restrictions on cellphones in schools and on the use of social media use for minors.

This regulation comes in response to tragic events involving children who have taken their own lives due to online bullying in recent times.

Additionally, many complaints have been received from parents who are struggling with the pressure of their children being online.

Parents and campaigners in favor of the ban describe the bill as a long-overdue step to hold technology companies accountable for children’s online safety.

However, critics warn that the ban could restrict young people’s access to support networks and create greater risks for those who break the ban.

Those in favor of this laws, arguing that goal of this ban is to protect young people from the potential harms of social media, including exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, mental health risks, and privacy issues. By restricting access, the government aims to reduce these risks during a critical developmental period.

Importantly, this is not a criminal penalty for under-16s who might still access these platforms; rather, it legally requires social media companies to prevent underage users from having accounts. Platforms must verify age and remove accounts of users under 16.
