Wed 08 May 2024:
Polish state-run National Research Institute (NASK) have accused Russian cyber operatives of targeting networks associated with government this week.
NASK identified the group responsible as APT28, believed to be affiliated with Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency. Utilizing malicious software, the group aimed its attacks at various Polish government entities.
This revelation comes shortly after Germany and its allies reported that APT28 conducted extensive cyber espionage activities against German defense and aerospace companies, as well as the Social Democrats party in Germany.
In a statement, NASK said, “Malware targeting Polish government institutions was distributed this week by the APT28 group, associated with Russia’s intelligence services,” NASK said in a statement.
“Technical indicators and similarities to past attacks allowed the identification of the APT28 group … This group is associated with the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU).”
NASK advised network administrators to ascertain whether their systems had come under attack.
In an interview with Ukrainian news service Economic Truth cited by Polish state news agency PAP, Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said Warsaw was constantly identifying cyberattacks from Russia on targets including the water supply and the health service.
In response to accusations by Germany regarding Russian cyberattacks on its defense, aerospace firms, and ruling party, Moscow accused Berlin earlier in the day of perpetuating unfounded myths about Russian hackers to exacerbate tensions.
