Sat 21 March 2026:
The recently released spy thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge (commonly referred to as Dhurandhar 2), directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, has ignited a fierce political debate across India.
Opposition leaders have accused the film of promoting hatred against the Muslim community and serving as propaganda, while BJP figures defend it as a truthful depiction of national security realities.
Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi from Maharashtra launched a sharp attack, calling the movie a deliberate attempt to spread hatred and malign Muslims.
He questioned its portrayal of slain mafia don Atiq Ahmed as having direct links to Pakistan’s ISI, insisting there is no such connection and that the film unfairly links an entire community to wrongdoing. “This film is made only to spread hatred. It is a false film,” Azmi told IANS, adding that every community has good and bad individuals, but such depictions foster division.

Congress leader Hussain Dalwai echoed concerns, suggesting the film’s funding be probed, hinting it “may be financed by the RSS.” Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad accused the BJP of using the film to divert attention from real issues like unemployment, claiming the party lacks substantive work.
Congress MP Imran Masood dismissed it as “nonsense” and criticized its apparent glorification of the 2016 demonetisation policy. He stressed that India’s 25 crore Muslims cannot be alienated, warning that hatred hampers national progress.
On the other side, BJP leaders pushed back strongly. Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao lamented the Congress’s opposition, accusing it of ignoring public sentiment and national loyalty for political gain. Former Jammu and Kashmir DGP S.P. Vaid defended the film, asserting it reflects factual events from both parts of the franchise.
The controversy highlights deeper divides over cinema, nationalism, communal representation, and alleged political agendas in entertainment, with the film drawing both praise for its intensity and criticism for its narrative choices amid ongoing real-world sensitivities.
