Pope Francis commenced his most extensive trip to date on Tuesday, kicking off a 12-day, four-nation tour in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Pope shared his hopes for the journey on social media, asking for prayers as he embarked on his mission across Asia and Oceania.

Upon arrival in Jakarta after a 13-hour flight from Rome, Pope Francis was greeted warmly by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who expressed gratitude for the Pontiff’s visit. Delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this long-anticipated trip is expected to address key global peace issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Gaza crisis.

Promoting Tolerance and Interreligious Dialogue in a Model Nation of Coexistence

During his stay in Jakarta, Pope Francis is scheduled to visit significant landmarks such as the presidential palace, Jakarta Cathedral, and Istiqlal Mosque. Vatican News highlighted that the Pope’s visit to Indonesia—a nation known for its model of tolerance and coexistence—will likely focus on promoting human fraternity and interreligious dialogue.

This visit marks the third time a Pope has visited Indonesia, following the trips of Paul VI in 1970 and John Paul II in 1989. After Indonesia, Pope Francis will continue his journey with stops in Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Singapore, marking his 45th overseas trip since becoming Pope.
