POPE FRANCIS SAYS WATCHING ‘MAJOR CRISIS’ OF MASS DEPORTATIONS IN US

Pope Francis has criticised Trump’s push to carry out what the US president has called the largest deportation operation in US history.

In a letter to US bishops, the pope affirmed the right of people to seek shelter and safety in other lands and said he was concerned with what is going on in the US.

“The rightly formed conscience cannot fail to make a critical judgment and express its disagreement with any measure that tacitly or explicitly identifies the illegal status of some migrants with criminality,” he said.

While the pope said it is one thing to develop a policy to regulate migration legally, it is another to expel people purely on the basis of their undocumented status.

“The act of deporting people who in many cases have left their own land for reasons of extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution or serious deterioration of the environment, damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families, and places them in a state of particular vulnerability and defenselessness,” he wrote.

Trump’s ‘border czar’ tells pope to ‘stick to the Catholic Church’

Tom Homan has responded to Pope Francis’s letter describing mass deportations in the US as a “major crisis”.

“I wish he’d stick to the Catholic Church and fix that and leave border enforcement to us,” Homan, who is tasked with carrying out Trump’s deportation push, told reporters at the White House.

This isn’t the first time that Homan has hit out against the pope for his criticism of Trump’s hardline immigration policies.

In an interview in late January with right-wing outlet Newsmax, Homan said Francis “ought to concentrate on fixing the Catholic Church”.
