Thu 04 November 2021:
As part of his commitment to establish more gender equality in the Church, Pope Francis named a woman to lead the Vatican governorate on Thursday.
Raffaella Petrini, a Franciscan sister, was named the new secretary general of the governorate by the pontiff, making her the first woman to hold the position.
Petrini, 52, will be in charge of handling administrative activities, including the Vatican museums, post office, and police, making her the world’s smallest state’s highest-ranking woman.
The role is traditionally held by a bishop, according to the National Catholic Reporter online publication.
ope Francis broke Catholic tradition by appointing a woman as an undersecretary of the synod of bishops in February, the first woman to hold the position with voting rights in a body that considers important doctrine issues.
Last year, the pontiff appointed six women to the council which oversees the Vatican’s finances.
