POWER OUTAGE CAUSES CHAOS AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT, DISRUPTING NUMEROUS FLIGHTS

A major power outage at Manchester International Airport on Sunday morning (June 23) led to significant disruptions, causing numerous flight cancellations and delays. Authorities advised passengers flying from terminals one and two to avoid traveling to the airport.

Major Disruption

Manchester Airports Group, which also operates London Stansted and East Midlands airports, reported “widespread disruption” due to the power cut. Although power was restored, the impact was severe, affecting flight schedules and baggage handling.

Passengers scheduled to fly from terminal 3 were told to proceed as usual unless notified otherwise by their airline but were warned of potential delays. Airport authorities are working to expedite flights for passengers already at the airport to clear the backlog.

Peak Season Impact

The incident comes at the start of the summer holiday season, exacerbating the situation. Travel expert Simon Calder told Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC) that the disruption could result in passengers waiting several days to reach their destinations due to heavy bookings and the extensive cancellations.

Passengers shared images and videos on social media depicting long queues and chaotic scenes. Complaints included misplaced baggage and lack of communication from airport staff. A video showed dozens of people waiting in line, with one user noting the continuous cancellation of flights without any updates from the staff.

Recent Travel Industry Challenges

The UK travel industry has experienced several disruptions recently, including a nationwide outage of immigration e-gates last month, which caused delays at major airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
