POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE OF 6.8 MAGNITUDE KILLED 95 PEOPLE IN CHINA’S TIBET REGION

A total of 95 people have been confirmed dead and 130 others injured as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning, according to the state-run Xinhua News.

The earthquake struck the city of Xigaze in the Xizang Autonomous Region, local name for Tibet, at 9.05 a.m. local time (0105GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Local government officials are reaching out to various townships to assess the impact of the quake while the Chinese military has deployed drone to survey the epicenter after of the earthquake.

Separately, the US Geological Survey recorded the magnitude as 7.1.

China’s President Xi Jinping has directed authorities to take “all-out” rescue efforts to search and rescue trapped people.

The western theater command of People’s Liberation Army has readied its disaster relief emergency plan consisting of transport, medical planes, helicopters, and ground forces to assist with relief operations.

At about 11:00, the first rescue force of 30 people from the Armed Police Tibet Corps arrived at the earthquake-stricken area and carried out preliminary rescue work together with more than 200 officers and soldiers of the stationed troops and militia.

At present, 408 officers and soldiers of the Armed Police Tibet Corps have arrived in the disaster area, and nearly 1,000 people from the Tibet Military Region have been deployed to the disaster area for rescue.

The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management urgently allocated 100 million yuan of central natural disaster relief funds to support Tibet in its earthquake disaster relief work, and coordinated the use of the funds for emergency rescue and relief of disaster-stricken people, with a focus on emergency response such as search and rescue, transfer and resettlement of disaster victims, elimination of hazards, secondary disaster risk inspection and emergency remediation, and repair of collapsed and damaged houses.
