Fri 28 June 2024:
From July, middle and high-income residents in Johannesburg will see a R200 monthly deduction when they recharge their prepaid electricity, SABC News reported. This new fee, approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), is intended to cover network and service charges.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena explained that currently, prepaid meter customers benefit from the cheapest tariff plan without a basic charge, but this will change with the new flat rate for infrastructure maintenance.
“However, should the customer at the beginning of the month purchase electricity for less than R400, the payment will be split between covering the fixed charge and charges for consumption of electricity to ensure that the customer gets some kWh with every purchase until the minimum purchase threshold of R400 is reached. It will however not be possible to accumulate non-payment of the total basic charge beyond one calendar month.”
