Sat 08 November 2025:

Following the groping of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, which was caught on camera, her government unveiled a plan on Friday to combat sexual harassment by classifying it as a serious offence in all states.

Victims are to be encouraged through a campaign to report cases and access to justice is to be improved.

“All women, adolescents and girls should know that they are not alone,” said Women’s Minister Citlalli Hernández Mora.

“If they experience any kind of violence, it is important to report it.” She also called on men to rethink their behaviour towards women.

The incident drew swift condemnation from across Mexico’s political spectrum, including opposition lawmakers and senators who held a joint press conference labeling it “humiliating” and a stark reminder of everyday harassment faced by women.
Sheinbaum, 63,  was casually mingling with a group of supporters and taking selfies during a brief walk to the Education Ministry—a practice she inherited from her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to maintain close contact with the public.

A visibly intoxicated man approached her from behind, embraced her without consent, attempted to kiss her neck, and groped her chest.

Sheinbaum quickly pushed his hands away and turned to confront him, but it took several seconds for a government aide to intervene and separate them.

The man was arrested overnight on November 5 and is being held at Mexico City’s Sex Crimes Investigation Unit. On November 6, during her daily press briefing at the National Palace, Sheinbaum announced she is pressing formal charges against him, emphasizing that “a line must be drawn” to protect women nationwide.

She called the act not just a personal violation but “an assault on all women.”

Sheinbaum later described the assailant as “totally drunk,” which did little to excuse the act but highlighted the brazenness of the assault in broad daylight.

Sheinbaum, a left-wing politician, is Mexico’s first female president. Data from the state statistics institute shows nearly half of all women in Mexico have experienced sexual violence at least once.

Strengthening women’s rights is among her most important priorities, Sheinbaum has said.
