Fri 12 July 2024:

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that the BRICS economic bloc might establish its own parliament in the future. Speaking at the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg, Putin emphasized that regular meetings of BRICS lawmakers would facilitate the formation of such a parliament.

“BRICS does not yet have its own institutionalized parliamentary structure. But I believe this idea will be realized in the future. Your forum, I am sure, will contribute to this,” he asserted.

Putin lauded the efforts of lawmakers to strengthen ties between BRICS member countries and tackle issues related to socioeconomic development, national well-being, international tension reduction, and the creation of “a more just, democratic, multipolar, and multilateral world order.”

He acknowledged the complexity and resistance involved in establishing a new world order that reflects the true balance of power and the current geopolitical, economic, and demographic reality, particularly from the elites of the “golden billion” states.

Putin pointed out the pressure on those with independent positions, citing the use of forceful coercion, unilateral sanctions, selective trade rules application, and blackmail against international law.

He also highlighted BRICS’ focus on positive changes in the global economy, including increasing the use of national currencies in trade and investment, and developing secure financial instruments and mutual settlement mechanisms.

During the forum, Putin held separate meetings with the heads of the Chinese and Tanzanian parliaments, Zhao Leji and Tulia Ackson, respectively.

BRICS, founded in 2009 with Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded to include South Africa in 2011. Last December, six more countries joined the group, but it retained its original name.
