Wed 11 September 2024:
The fusion of quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense potential for transforming computational speed, but it also introduces significant risks related to cybersecurity, privacy, and other potential dangers, according to a report by S&P Global on Tuesday.
“AI and quantum computing each offer foundations for new technologies and applications that are capable of redefining the boundaries of computational possibility,” the ratings agency stated. However, it emphasized that the real game-changer lies in combining AI’s ability to process vast datasets with quantum computing’s unparalleled processing power. “This combination promises to be truly revolutionary,” the report added.

The partnership between these technologies could accelerate advancements across various sectors, from fast-tracking drug discovery in healthcare to optimizing energy production for greater sustainability. However, S&P Global warned of significant risks: “Quantum computers can potentially break current public-key encryption methods but should also enable the development of quantum-resistant encryption techniques. AI can enhance cybersecurity by detecting and mitigating threats in real-time.”
The report also highlighted the growing risk to privacy, as AI and quantum systems evolve. “As these systems are combined and develop, so will their ability to infer sensitive information from seemingly innocuous data, potentially exposing individuals and companies to privacy breaches and identity theft,” it cautioned.
While the potential of quantum AI is vast, the technologies are still in their early stages, with expertise concentrated among a small number of institutions and individuals. S&P Global noted that the widespread commercial adoption of quantum AI remains unlikely within the next decade, as it will require significant human talent, specialized hardware, and the development of advanced algorithms.
For now, quantum AI will remain “the preserve of well-funded institutions,” as the field continues to develop.
