Mon 11 July 2022:
On Monday, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced her candidacy to succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister, bringing the total number of contenders to 11.
Truss, who has held ministerial positions in several government agencies, including commerce, justice, and the treasury, promised to cut taxes while maintaining a harsh stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
She is vying to succeed Johnson, who was ousted on Thursday after his administration collapsed due to a string of scandals. Later on Monday, the procedures for the leadership election, which aims to elect a replacement by September, will be announced.

“Under my leadership, I would start cutting taxes from day one to take immediate action to help people deal with the cost of living,” Truss wrote in the Daily Telegraph. “It isn’t right to be putting up taxes now.”
The race for a new leader followed one of the most remarkable periods in modern British political history, when more than 50 government ministers quit, denouncing Johnson’s character, integrity and inability to tell the truth.
With many lawmakers unhappy with Johnson remaining in office until a successor is found, the party is likely to accelerate the election process. It could insist that candidates have the backing of around 30 lawmakers to enter the process, before voting begins this week to whittle the number down to two.
Approximately 200,000 Conservative Party members will then select a winner following weeks of hustings across the country.
As the early front-runner, former finance minister Rishi Sunak has drawn criticism for his economic record and pledges to lower taxes, even if doing so increases government borrowing.
A legislator verified that a report criticizing Sunak’s record had been making its way via lawmaker WhatsApp groups.
